Lessons From Writing A Threesome

Lessons from writing a threesome by Sage L Mattison

I’ve written approximately 70,800 words about the threesome between Jake, Jamie and Brett. There’s still quite a long way to go in their journey, a lot of their lives that want to be written (I’ve planned out at least 4 or 5 more novellas I believe) but I’ve already learned a lot from writing their tale. Here’s some things I wanted to share.

Why write a threesome?

In 2014, I decided to start self publishing erotica. I wanted to do something fun and for myself. I’ve been a writer for as long as I can remember but for TOO LONG, I felt shame for reading and writing about sex. And I decided to say FUCK THIS and just go for it! Because sex isn’t bad, it’s hot and fun. Because I’m a girl who is all about doing what makes me happy and writing about sex makes me happy.

When I sat down to start writing, or more accurately when the story tumbled into my head, it was a threesome from the get-go.

The dynamic of the three characters was something that truly fascinated me and that I wanted to explore. One of the reasons I chose to write We Need Him as a serial story was so I could follow their lives, explore their relationship and just continue to build on it.

But why? Mainly because I enjoy reading threesome stories but have a hard time finding them. I’m kind of obsessed with how people think and interact with each other and so writing something sort of different and out there made sense for me.

Why MMF? (vs the more popular MFM)*

Because it’s hot.

Because reading about two men together is a turn on for me and many others.

Simple as that, really.

And that’s just what came to me.

What have been the challenges?

Maybe it’s a common problem with any story that has more than 2 main characters or maybe it’s a common problem with short novellas but I’ve struggled with making sure everyone has enough “screen time” as it were.

My beta reader has said to me about Part 2 and Part 3 that there’s not much of X character seen (different each time).

So I try to add in a few little scenes here and there but also remind myself that X’s story is in the next book (or wherever).

I haven’t had this problem in the past when I’ve written with 3+ main characters so I’m not sure if it’s the dynamic, the novella format or what exactly but it’s been an interesting struggle. I try to write each of my novellas with a story arc so there’s a plot: a beginning, a middle and an end (while also having a cliffhanger so you keep wanting more!). And that often means I’m focusing more on the struggles or life of one character at a time.

It’s something that is now always on my mind, which is good because it means I’m not lacking on each character as much. Lack of screen time and history and thoughts from each character is constantly on my mind when I’m editing to make sure the story (and each character) is well rounded.

What has been easy?

As with most of my writing, I’ve found that writing the sex scenes between a threesome is the easy part.

Sure, sometimes I have to pay extra attention to where all 6 hands and 3 sets of genitals are but overall, that’s the part I will gravitate toward when I’m stuck on writing a different.

What’s the plan for the future?

I have about 4 or 5 novellas planned still for Jake, Jamie and Brett. I’ve written out a rough outline/timeline of where I want their story to go and how it will end. Obviously, it will probably change along the way and that’s okay.

I will not be exclusively writing threesomes. Because as I writer, I need variety.

But I will continue to write erotica of course. I have two gay serial stories planned, (one m/m and another f/f) as well as a “regular” m/f story planned (just to be more fun, there will be a domme). Oh and poetry, and another m/f story that will be full length novel and lean a bit more toward romance than erotica.

I set big goals for myself and I’m probably crazy but that’s okay.

Even after Jake, Jamie and Brett’s official story is done, I won’t be against coming back to visit them someday. And if another threesome group works their way into my head and wants to be written, I will give them their time and see what comes of it.

Do you have any other questions about writing a threesome? Let me know in the comments!

*MMF stands for male-male-female which means the two men bisexual and have a sexual/romantic relationship together as well as with the woman and MFM stands for male-female-male which means the men are both heterosexual and the only sexual/romantic relationship is with the woman, basically they share.)

“Then let me help you, love.” Brett’s voice was soft but warm and promising. A shiver ran through Jamie, whose mind couldn’t even begin to come up with what he had in mind.
“But…” Jamie started, rebelling at the idea of intimacy at a time like this and Brett stood up, towering over her.
“Hush.” Brett said and pulled her up by the hand. “It’s Saturday, we can’t do anything today. Jake will call his mother on Monday but until then, you need to just relax and stop thinking about it or you will drive yourself crazy. Give me control, let go and let me help.” His lips brushed against hers, silently asking her to give in. Jamie’s mind warred with her heart and her now aching pussy. She wanted to keep stressing, keep worrying so she could try to come up with a plan but she also knew Brett was right. There was nothing they could do right now and she was going to make herself sick if she didn’t relax.
With a soft moan, Jamie let her body fall against Brett.

Jake and Jamie thought everything was finally falling into place. They were focusing on their commitment to each other, Brett was dating them again and had even opened up about his horrific past.

When tragic news about her mother’s illness is brought to light, the threesome is left asking, “Is this relationship wrong?”

As Jamie seeks out the answers to help her mother, the bond between Jake, Jamie and Brett grows stronger as they support her. Can Jamie stay with Brett and help her mother at the same time? How could she leave him when she’s just fallen in love?

Find out in the newest installment of the We Need Him Series! This novella is approximately 22,000 words and ends on a cliffhanger.
